Hand-loomed nearly seven decades ago in the Bessarabian hinterlands, this kilim plays like a folk song in woven form. Alternating bands of russet, ochre, indigo, and sage march across the field, each stripe alive with hooked “S” motifs and rams-horn symbols that once guarded nomad tents from misfortune.
Framed by deep mulberry borders and a scalloped inner fence, the composition ripples with vibrant rhythm yet remains beautifully balanced. Natural wool dyes—madder, walnut, indigo—have mellowed into a rich, harmonious palette, while the weave retains its crisp clarity.
