A beautifully aged handmade wool rug from Taşpınar, Central Anatolia, featuring a powerful central medallion composition, richly layered borders, and the refined geometric-floral character associated with traditional Taşpınar weaving.
The central field is built around a large layered diamond-shaped medallion set on a warm burgundy-red ground. Its ivory outer section contains numerous small geometric and floral details, while the darker inner medallions create depth and a strong focal point.
Deep navy corner sections contrast beautifully with the red field and contain small stylized flowers and geometric ornaments. The composition is surrounded by several carefully structured borders filled with rosettes, floral forms, leaves, diamonds, and small repeating Anatolian motifs.
The palette combines burgundy, deep navy, ivory, muted olive, dark green, rust, brown, beige, and subtle red accents. Approximately 100 years old, the rug has developed a naturally softened palette and patina that emphasize its antique character.
About Taşpınar Rugs
Taşpınar is a historic carpet-weaving village in the Aksaray area of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Its rugs are among the recognizable village weaving traditions of the wider Konya–Aksaray region.
Traditional Taşpınar rugs are particularly known for their carefully organized compositions and strong balance between geometric structure and floral ornamentation.
Common characteristics include:
- Large central medallions
- Diamond and stepped geometric forms
- Richly ornamented inner fields
- Stylized flowers, rosettes, and leaves
- Multiple narrow and wide decorative borders
- Deep reds and blues contrasted with ivory and earthy colors
- Strong symmetry combined with subtle handmade irregularities
Older Taşpınar rugs often have a dense and sophisticated appearance, with the central medallion surrounded by several layers of ornamentation. Compared with some more spontaneous nomadic rugs, Taşpınar examples can feel especially structured, architectural, and finely balanced.
This particular piece is an excellent example of that visual language, with its large central medallion, dark blue corner sections, richly detailed floral borders, and deep antique coloration.
