A refined vintage handmade wool rug from Sivas, Central Anatolia, featuring the elegant and highly rhythmic Şal (Shal / Shawl) design traditionally associated with repeating diagonal textile-inspired patterns.

The central field is covered with numerous narrow diagonal bands filled with small stylized floral and boteh-like motifs, creating a continuous flowing pattern rather than a dominant central medallion. This dense repetition gives the rug a sophisticated textile quality and allows the eye to move naturally across the entire field.

The surrounding borders contrast beautifully with the diagonal center, featuring larger geometric and botanical motifs on an ivory ground. The palette combines ivory, burgundy, muted red, olive, soft brown, beige, dark blue, and earthy accent tones, giving the rug a balanced and understated appearance.

Approximately 80 years old, this piece reflects the fine decorative traditions associated with Sivas weaving and carries the natural patina, tonal variation, and handmade irregularities expected from an authentic vintage textile.

What is the Sivas Şal Design?

The term “Şal”, also written as Shal or Shawl design, refers to a decorative pattern inspired by the repeating motifs seen in historic woven shawls and textiles.

In Anatolian rugs, the Şal design is typically characterized by:

  • Repeating boteh or paisley-like motifs
  • Small floral and botanical forms
  • Diagonal or gently flowing rows
  • Dense all-over patterning
  • A field without a large central medallion
  • A highly rhythmic, textile-like appearance

The word “şal” means “shawl” in Turkish, and the design reflects the decorative vocabulary of patterned shawls that circulated throughout the broader Ottoman, Persian, and Central Asian cultural world.

In Sivas rugs, this type of pattern can create an especially refined appearance because the small motifs are repeated very precisely across the field. Rather than relying on one dominant motif, the beauty comes from repetition, movement, and subtle variation.

This particular rug is a strong example of that approach, with its diagonal patterned field and contrasting geometric border structure.
