A rare and expressive vintage handmade Kurdish wool rug from the Malatya–Adıyaman area of eastern and southeastern Anatolia, featuring bold geometric medallions, powerful symmetry, and a richly saturated tribal color palette.

The central field is organized around two large octagonal medallions connected by smaller diamond-shaped motifs. Each medallion contains layered geometric forms, hooked details, crosses, diamonds, and abstract symbolic elements outlined strongly against a deep burgundy ground.

Around the central composition, smaller stepped and angular motifs fill the open spaces, while the outer borders are decorated with repeating diamonds, hooked forms, geometric rosettes, and tribal symbols. The bold contrast between dark outlines and warm colors gives the rug a particularly strong folk-art presence.

The palette combines deep burgundy, dark brown, black, burnt orange, mustard yellow, ivory, muted red, and earthy tones. Approximately 100 years old, the rug has developed natural tonal variation, patina, and surface character that enhance its authentic antique appearance.

About Malatya–Adıyaman Kurdish Rugs

The Malatya and Adıyaman region lies within a culturally diverse part of Anatolia with long-established village, pastoral, and Kurdish textile traditions.

Handwoven rugs associated with Kurdish communities from this broader area often feature a visual language based on:

  • Large geometric medallions
  • Strongly outlined diamonds and octagonal forms
  • Hooked and stepped motifs
  • Abstract symbolic elements
  • Bold red, burgundy, orange, brown, black, and ivory palettes
  • Dense wool construction suited to household and village use

Many traditional Kurdish rugs were woven in domestic environments rather than standardized workshops. Designs were often transmitted through families and communities and interpreted freely by individual weavers. Because of this, older examples frequently show subtle asymmetry, changing motif proportions, and spontaneous decorative details.

These variations are not imperfections; they are an important part of the rug's handmade tribal character and cultural identity.

This example is especially striking for its two monumental dark-centered medallions, interconnected geometric structure, bold ivory outlines, and richly decorated burgundy field.
