A striking vintage handmade Kurdish wool rug from Eastern Turkey, featuring a bold two-panel composition, powerful geometric medallions, and a vivid palette characteristic of traditional village and tribal weaving.
The central field is divided into two rectangular panels, each containing a large stepped geometric medallion. The medallions are constructed from angular hooked forms in deep red, brown, ivory, navy, and muted blue. Although the two sections follow a related design language, subtle differences between them reveal the individuality of the handweaving process.
The rug is surrounded by several narrow geometric borders filled with repeating hooked, angular, and abstract tribal motifs. Warm orange-red dominates the composition, while dark navy, ivory, mustard yellow, brown, and muted blue create strong contrast.
Approximately 80 years old, this rug has developed a beautiful aged surface, softened colors, and natural variations that enhance its authentic tribal character.
About Kurdish Rugs from Eastern Turkey
Traditional Kurdish rugs from Eastern Anatolia were historically woven in villages and pastoral communities for practical household use as well as for personal and decorative purposes.
Unlike workshop carpets, Kurdish village rugs often emphasize bold geometry, spontaneous composition, strong color contrasts, and individual interpretation. Patterns could vary significantly between weaving communities and even between individual weavers.
Common characteristics may include:
- Bold geometric medallions
- Hooked and stepped motifs
- Diamonds, crosses, and abstract symbolic forms
- Strong border systems
- Deep reds, oranges, blues, browns, ivory, and yellow
- Dense wool construction
- Slight asymmetry and irregularity created by hand
The motifs should not necessarily be interpreted as having one fixed symbolic meaning. In traditional village weaving, designs were often inherited, adapted, and freely interpreted across generations.
This example is especially distinctive for its two-panel composition, large stepped medallions, vivid orange-red ground, and strongly graphic tribal borders.
