A distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Sille, Konya, featuring a warm red field, large stylized floral medallions, architectural stepped forms, and richly decorated borders associated with the decorative traditions of Central Anatolia.

The central composition is arranged vertically on a muted brick-red field. Two large floral-geometric medallions dominate the lower and middle sections, each built from layered petals and angular outlines in soft gray, ochre, pink, and dark accent tones. At the upper end, a prominent stepped architectural form creates additional structure and gives the rug a subtle niche-like character.

The surrounding borders are particularly decorative. A dark gray-blue main border is filled with alternating stylized flowers, rosettes, leaves, and angular botanical motifs, while narrower black, mustard, and burgundy guard borders frame the composition.

The palette combines brick red, dusty rose, muted gray-blue, mustard yellow, olive, burgundy, soft pink, ivory, brown, and earthy tones. Approximately 60–70 years old, the rug has developed the natural tonal variations and surface character expected from an authentic vintage handmade textile.

About Sille Rugs

Sille is a historic settlement near Konya in Central Anatolia, Turkey, known for its rich cultural history, distinctive architecture, and long-standing craft traditions.

Because Sille developed within the broader Konya cultural and weaving environment, rugs associated with the area can share characteristics with other Central Anatolian textiles while retaining their own local decorative interpretations.

Traditional Sille and Konya-area rugs may include:

  • Strong geometric and architectural forms
  • Floral medallions and stylized rosettes
  • Stepped or niche-like compositions
  • Botanical motifs adapted into angular designs
  • Multiple richly patterned borders
  • Warm reds combined with yellow, gray-blue, green, ivory, and darker outlining tones

Sille is also historically notable for having been home to different religious and cultural communities, which contributed to a particularly rich local artistic environment. In older textiles from the area, this heritage can sometimes be reflected in unusual combinations of Anatolian geometric structure, floral ornamentation, and architectural imagery.

This particular rug is especially attractive for its large floral medallions, warm red ground, stepped upper composition, and highly decorative gray-blue floral border.
