A distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a strong geometric composition, richly layered borders, and the bold village character associated with traditional Anatolian weaving.
The central field is arranged with a sequence of geometric medallions and angular tribal motifs set against a deep burgundy and dark navy ground. Smaller symbolic forms fill the spaces between the main motifs, creating a dense and rhythmic composition.
The surrounding borders are decorated with repeating diamonds, hooks, floral-geometric motifs, and stylized symbolic forms, giving the rug a strong architectural frame. The palette combines deep burgundy, dark navy, muted red, ivory, brown, black, and subtle earthy accents.
Approximately 70 years old, this rug displays the natural tonal variation, handmade irregularities, and vintage patina expected from an authentic handwoven textile.
About Konya Rugs
Konya is one of the most historically important rug-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Carpet weaving has been practiced throughout Konya and its surrounding villages for centuries, with designs shaped by village, pastoral, nomadic, and domestic traditions.
Traditional Konya rugs are known for a wide variety of visual characteristics, including:
- Bold geometric medallions
- Stepped, hooked, and angular forms
- Stylized flowers and symbolic motifs
- Strong border systems
- Deep reds, blues, browns, greens, yellows, and ivory tones
- Individual variations created by the hand of the weaver
Unlike standardized workshop carpets, many village-made Konya rugs were woven using inherited motifs interpreted personally by each weaver. Small differences in symmetry, motif placement, and color are therefore part of their authentic handmade character.
This particular example is especially appealing for its dark saturated field, repeated geometric motifs, and richly patterned border structure, giving it a strong Anatolian folk-art quality.
