A distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a dense all-over geometric composition, repeated diamond medallions, and a rich earthy palette dominated by dark brown, rust, ivory, and muted orange.

The central field is organized into two horizontal rows of repeating diamond-shaped geometric medallions. Each medallion is surrounded by angular extensions, hooked forms, small rosettes, and compact tribal motifs, creating a highly rhythmic and detailed composition.

Instead of using one dominant central medallion, the weaver created an all-over repeating pattern, giving the rug a strong architectural and almost mosaic-like appearance. Numerous small geometric elements fill the spaces between the larger motifs, producing a dense and visually engaging surface.

The borders are equally elaborate, consisting of several narrow bands filled with repeating hooks, angular symbols, chevrons, and abstract geometric forms. Dark outlines and ivory highlights emphasize the intricate pattern against the warm brown and rust-colored ground.

Approximately 60 years old, the rug has developed natural tonal variation, subtle fading, and the soft surface character expected from an authentic handmade vintage textile.

About Konya Rugs

Konya is one of Turkey’s most historically important rug-weaving regions, located in Central Anatolia. Carpet weaving has been part of the region’s cultural heritage for centuries, with production taking place in the city itself as well as in numerous surrounding villages and nomadic communities.

Konya rugs can vary considerably in design, but traditional examples often feature:

  • Bold geometric compositions
  • Repeating diamonds and medallions
  • Hooks, stars, crosses, and angular motifs
  • Stylized flowers and botanical symbols
  • Dense multiple-border systems
  • Strong red, brown, navy, ivory, yellow, green, and earthy palettes
  • Natural asymmetry created by individual village weavers

Many older Konya rugs were woven for domestic use, dowries, prayer, and household decoration, rather than as standardized commercial products. As a result, each piece often carries small differences in motif placement, proportions, and color intensity.

This particular example is especially attractive for its dense repeating diamond pattern, dark earthy palette, numerous small tribal motifs, and highly structured geometric borders.
