A beautifully aged vintage handmade wool rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a warm red field, a distinctive central floral medallion, and richly decorated traditional borders.
The main field is dominated by a softly faded brick-red and rose-toned ground. At its center sits a compact floral medallion composed of stylized leaves, blossoms, and angular botanical forms in muted olive, mustard, cream, brown, and burgundy tones.
The field is framed by stepped corner sections and smaller decorative motifs, creating a balanced transition between the open central area and the more detailed borders. One side also features a rectangular ornamental panel containing stylized geometric and floral forms, giving the composition an especially individual handmade character.
The wide outer border is filled with repeating rosette-like floral motifs, separated by narrow geometric bands. Dark brown, muted burgundy, ivory, soft yellow, dusty rose, and olive tones give the rug a warm, naturally aged appearance.
Approximately 70 years old, the rug shows attractive fading, abrash, and tonal variation developed through age and traditional hand weaving.
About Konya Rugs
Konya is one of the most important historic rug-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Rugs from Konya and its surrounding villages were traditionally woven for everyday household use, dowries, prayer, and interior decoration.
Traditional Konya rugs can display a wide variety of compositions, including:
- Central medallion designs
- Stylized flowers and botanical motifs
- Geometric and stepped forms
- Rosettes and angular ornaments
- Multiple decorative borders
- Warm reds, browns, yellows, blues, greens, and ivory tones
- Individual asymmetry characteristic of village weaving
Many Konya rugs were created in domestic weaving environments rather than standardized workshops. Small variations in design, proportion, and color therefore reflect the individual hand of the weaver.
This particular example is especially attractive for its open red field, compact floral center, unusual side panel, richly patterned floral border, and softly faded vintage palette.
