A distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring three bold geometric medallions, richly detailed borders, and an unusual combination of floral and architectural motifs.
The central field is woven in a warm deep red ground and contains three large stepped medallions arranged horizontally. The central medallion is highlighted with mustard and muted blue tones, while the two outer medallions use darker blue, burgundy, green, and ivory accents. Each medallion contains a bold star-like floral form at its center, giving the composition a strong sense of rhythm and symmetry.
The surrounding design is especially decorative. Along the upper and lower borders are repeating architectural and village-like motifs, combined with stylized trees, flowers, and geometric forms. Narrow green bands with small multicolored flowers frame the central field, while darker outer borders provide contrast and visual depth.
The color palette combines deep red, burgundy, dark navy, mustard yellow, olive green, ivory, muted blue, black, and earthy brown tones. Approximately 60 years old, the rug has developed natural tonal variation and subtle signs of age that enhance its authentic vintage character.
About Konya Rugs
Konya is one of the most important historic rug-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. For generations, rugs have been woven in Konya and its surrounding villages for domestic use, dowries, prayer, decoration, and everyday household life.
Traditional Konya rugs are known for their wide variety of designs, including:
- Strong geometric medallions
- Stepped and angular forms
- Stylized flowers and botanical motifs
- Stars, diamonds, hooks, and symbolic shapes
- Architectural and village-inspired elements
- Richly structured multiple borders
- Warm reds combined with blue, green, yellow, ivory, and earthy shades
Because many older Konya rugs were woven in village homes rather than standardized workshops, their designs often show subtle asymmetry, individual motif interpretations, and natural color variation. These qualities are an important part of their handmade identity.
This particular example is especially interesting for its three-medallion composition, architectural border motifs, floral details, and vivid traditional palette.
