A distinctive vintage handmade wool prayer rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a spacious red mihrab field, a delicate hanging-lamp motif, and richly decorated floral and geometric borders.

The central composition is dominated by a tall mihrab, or prayer-niche design, woven in a warm coral-red tone. The relatively open field creates a calm visual space and allows the architectural form of the niche to stand out clearly.

Suspended from the upper section of the mihrab is a stylized hanging lamp motif, a decorative element frequently associated with traditional prayer-rug compositions. Its light blue, ivory, and muted yellow details contrast beautifully with the warm red background.

Above the pointed mihrab, an ivory section contains stylized leaf and botanical motifs, while the niche itself is surrounded by a blue-gray border decorated with small flowers and angular forms.

The wider outer field is especially elaborate. Repeating diamond medallions, rosettes, branching floral forms, leaves, and geometric ornaments appear symmetrically against the red ground. Rows of colorful shield- or niche-like motifs at the upper and lower ends provide another distinctive decorative element.

The color palette includes coral red, deep navy, muted blue-gray, ivory, olive green, burgundy, yellow, brown, and subtle orange accents. Approximately 60 years old, the rug displays natural tonal variation and slight handmade irregularities that contribute to its authentic vintage character.

About Konya Rugs

Konya is one of the major historic carpet-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Its surrounding towns and villages developed a wide variety of weaving traditions, including geometric village rugs, medallion carpets, and especially distinctive prayer rugs.

Traditional Konya rugs are often characterized by:

  • Architectural mihrab and prayer-niche designs
  • Stylized hanging lamps and botanical ornaments
  • Diamonds, hooks, rosettes, and geometric symbols
  • Strongly structured multiple borders
  • Rich reds contrasted with navy, green, ivory, yellow, and earthy colors
  • Individual variations created by village weavers

The mihrab gives the composition its directional structure, while surrounding floral and geometric motifs allow the weaver to create an individual interpretation within the traditional Anatolian design language.

This particular example is especially appealing for its large open red prayer field, hanging lamp motif, blue-gray floral frame, colorful diamond ornaments, and highly decorative outer borders.
