A highly decorative vintage handmade wool rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a strong prayer-niche composition, richly layered borders, and a vibrant traditional color palette.

The central field is built around a tall stepped mihrab form in soft salmon and rose tones, surrounded by a green upper field filled with stylized geometric and botanical motifs. Several narrow borders frame the composition, each containing different repeating patterns in mustard yellow, deep blue, burgundy, ivory, black, green, pink, and multicolored accents.

Approximately 100 years old, this rug has developed the natural patina and subtle tonal variation expected from an authentic antique handmade textile. Its bold geometry and colorful border structure give it a particularly expressive Anatolian folk-art character.

About Konya Rugs

Konya is one of the most important historic weaving centers of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Rug weaving has been practiced in Konya and its surrounding villages for centuries, producing a wide variety of designs influenced by local village, nomadic, and devotional traditions.

Konya rugs are especially known for:

  • Strong geometric compositions
  • Stepped and architectural mihrab motifs
  • Stylized flowers, trees, stars, and symbolic forms
  • Multiple richly decorated borders
  • Bold combinations of red, yellow, green, blue, ivory, and dark outlining tones

Prayer rugs from the Konya region often feature a clearly defined mihrab, representing the prayer niche associated with the direction of prayer. Around this central form, weavers frequently added floral, geometric, and symbolic motifs that reflected local weaving traditions and individual artistic interpretation.

This example is especially notable for its large stepped prayer niche, green upper field, and numerous contrasting decorative borders, creating a highly layered and visually rich composition.
