A distinctive vintage handmade wool prayer rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring an elegant architectural mihrab composition, column-like motifs, floral ornamentation, and richly patterned traditional borders.

The central field is dominated by a tall red mihrab or prayer-niche design. Two narrow vertical column forms rise along the sides of the field, while a group of stylized floral motifs creates a decorative focal point in the upper center. Above the mihrab, the design becomes more elaborate with geometric, floral, and architectural elements woven against a deep navy background.

The surrounding border is especially detailed, combining repeating diamond medallions, stylized flowers, angular leaves, and geometric motifs. Deep navy, burgundy, muted blue, ivory, mustard yellow, brown, and red create a strong yet balanced traditional palette.

Approximately 60 years old, the rug has developed natural tonal variation and subtle surface character that reflect its handmade vintage origin.

About Konya Rugs

Konya is one of the major historic rug-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Rugs from Konya and its surrounding villages represent a wide range of traditional styles, including geometric village carpets, medallion rugs, and highly distinctive prayer rugs.

Traditional Konya rugs often feature:

  • Architectural mihrab or prayer-niche compositions
  • Columns and stepped geometric forms
  • Stylized flowers and botanical motifs
  • Diamonds, hooks, and symbolic geometric details
  • Multiple richly decorated borders
  • Strong reds combined with navy, ivory, yellow, green, and earthy colors

Konya prayer rugs are particularly valued for the way their architectural framework and decorative motifs are combined. The mihrab provides a strong directional structure, while surrounding flowers, geometric forms, and borders allow individual weavers to interpret traditional patterns in their own way.

This example stands out for its tall red prayer field, paired column motifs, floral central ornament, dark blue upper section, and strongly patterned geometric borders.
