A striking vintage handmade wool prayer rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a vivid red mihrab field, strong geometric framing, and richly decorated traditional borders.

The composition is centered around a tall mihrab or prayer-niche design woven on a deep crimson-red field. The interior of the niche is relatively open, allowing the saturated red color to become the visual focus, while small dark hooked motifs create a delicate rhythmic outline along its edges.

Above the pointed mihrab, an ivory panel contains stylized leaf, floral, and geometric motifs. The central field is surrounded by several contrasting borders in dark navy, ivory, red, green, blue, and brown. Repeating diamond medallions, small flowers, branching forms, and colorful leaf-like motifs create a densely decorated frame around the simpler central niche.

The palette combines crimson red, deep navy, ivory, forest green, muted blue, burgundy, brown, orange, and earthy accent tones. Approximately 60 years old, the rug displays natural tonal variation and the subtle irregularities expected from an authentic handwoven vintage textile.

About Konya Rugs

Konya is one of the most important historic carpet-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. For centuries, the city and its surrounding villages have been associated with handwoven carpets produced in domestic, village, pastoral, and nomadic environments.

Konya rugs are diverse because individual villages developed their own interpretations of traditional Anatolian motifs. Common characteristics may include:

  • Architectural mihrab and prayer-niche designs
  • Strong geometric compositions
  • Diamonds, hooks, stars, and angular motifs
  • Stylized flowers, leaves, and tree forms
  • Multiple decorative border systems
  • Rich reds contrasted with navy, green, yellow, ivory, and earthy tones

Prayer rugs from the Konya region are especially recognizable for their directional mihrab composition. The niche provides the architectural framework, while flowers, leaves, geometric ornaments, and protective folk motifs are incorporated around it according to the individual weaver's interpretation.

This particular example stands out for its large uninterrupted red mihrab field, colorful geometric borders, ivory upper panel, and repeating diamond and floral motifs.
