A beautiful vintage handmade wool prayer rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a strong red mihrab field, vertically arranged floral motifs, and richly patterned traditional borders.

The central composition is built around a tall prayer-niche or mihrab form on a warm brick-red ground. Three stylized floral medallions are arranged vertically along the center, connected by branching botanical forms that create a strong sense of direction and symmetry.

At the upper end of the field, the pointed mihrab is framed by a soft yellow section decorated with stylized floral and geometric motifs. Multiple surrounding borders contain repeating diamond-shaped flowers, rosettes, leaves, hooks, and small geometric ornaments in ivory, gray, burgundy, yellow, brown, and red.

The palette combines brick red, burgundy, ivory, gray, mustard yellow, brown, muted green, and earthy tones. Approximately 60–70 years old, the rug displays natural tonal variation, subtle wear, and the individual character expected from an authentic handmade vintage textile.

About Konya Rugs

Konya is one of the most important historic rug-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Handwoven carpets have been produced throughout Konya and its surrounding villages for generations, with designs shaped by village life, pastoral traditions, and local interpretations of Anatolian motifs.

Traditional Konya rugs frequently feature:

  • Mihrab or prayer-niche compositions
  • Geometric medallions and stepped forms
  • Stylized flowers, branches, and botanical motifs
  • Diamonds, hooks, and symbolic geometric details
  • Multiple decorative border systems
  • Rich red, yellow, blue, green, ivory, and earthy color combinations

Prayer rugs are traditionally designed with a directional mihrab motif, creating a clear upper and lower orientation. In village weaving, this architectural framework is often enriched with floral motifs and symbolic forms interpreted freely by the individual weaver.

This example is especially attractive for its deep red prayer field, vertically arranged floral medallions, yellow mihrab section, and densely patterned floral borders.
