A beautiful vintage handmade wool prayer rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a tall red mihrab field, strong geometric framing, and richly decorated traditional borders.
The central composition is built around a large mihrab or prayer-niche form woven on a warm coral-red field. The inside of the niche is intentionally open and uncluttered, which gives the rug a calm, balanced appearance and allows the strong color of the field to become the main visual focus.
At the upper section of the niche, an ivory panel contains stylized leaf, floral, and geometric motifs. The mihrab is surrounded by dark blue and ivory borders filled with repeating angular forms. The wider outer field is decorated with symmetrical diamond medallions, small floral motifs, branching forms, and colorful geometric symbols in green, blue, burgundy, ivory, brown, and red.
The upper and lower ends also feature a distinctive row of repeated shield- or niche-like geometric motifs, adding another decorative layer to the composition.
The palette combines coral red, deep navy, ivory, forest green, muted blue, burgundy, brown, black, and earthy tones. Approximately 60 years old, the rug shows natural tonal variation and subtle irregularities that reflect its handmade vintage character.
About Konya Rugs
Konya is one of the most important historic carpet-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Rugs from Konya and its surrounding villages are known for their strong geometric structure, rich symbolic vocabulary, and varied prayer-rug traditions.
Traditional Konya rugs may feature:
- Architectural mihrab or prayer-niche designs
- Diamonds, hooks, stars, and stepped motifs
- Stylized flowers, leaves, and branches
- Strongly structured multiple borders
- Rich red, blue, green, yellow, ivory, and earthy palettes

Prayer rugs from the Konya region typically use the mihrab as the main directional element. Around this architectural form, the weaver may add floral, geometric, and symbolic motifs according to local tradition and personal interpretation.
