A beautiful vintage handmade wool prayer rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a strong architectural mihrab composition, warm red field, and richly layered floral and geometric borders.
The central field is dominated by a long red prayer niche, or mihrab, framed by a stepped pointed arch. Small stylized botanical motifs are arranged symmetrically along the field, adding detail without overwhelming the open central area.
At the upper section of the mihrab, a mustard-yellow panel contains four bold geometric motifs. These angular forms complement the stepped architecture of the prayer niche and give the rug a distinctly Anatolian character.
The surrounding borders are especially decorative. A broad inner border contains repeating angular and hooked motifs in ivory, red, mustard, and muted brown, while the wider outer band is filled with repeating floral rosettes in red, yellow, ivory, dusty pink, and earthy shades. The multiple-border construction gives the rug considerable visual depth.
Approximately 70 years old, the rug has developed natural fading, tonal variation, and a softly aged patina that contribute to its authentic vintage appearance.
About Konya Prayer Rugs
Konya is one of the historic centers of rug weaving in Central Anatolia, with a long tradition of producing rugs for domestic, ceremonial, and devotional use.
A traditional Turkish prayer rug is commonly called a seccade. Its defining element is the mihrab, the niche-shaped design representing the architectural prayer niche found in a mosque. When the rug is used for prayer, the mihrab is traditionally oriented toward the qibla, the direction of Mecca.
Konya prayer rugs may feature:
- Stepped or pointed mihrab niches
- Stylized flowers and botanical forms
- Hooked and angular geometric motifs
- Rosettes, stars, and small symbolic ornaments
- Multiple richly decorated borders
- Warm red, yellow, ivory, brown, blue, and earthy palettes
- Handmade asymmetry and natural tonal variations
This example is particularly attractive for its large open red mihrab, mustard architectural panel, repeating floral borders, and softly faded traditional palette.
