A beautifully aged handmade wool prayer rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a strong architectural mihrab composition, richly ornamented floral borders, and the warm earthy palette associated with traditional Anatolian village weaving.
The central field is dominated by a tall stepped mihrab or prayer-niche motif in deep burgundy, outlined against a softly faded gray-lavender background. Its elongated form creates a clear directional composition characteristic of traditional Turkish prayer rugs.
Above and below the central niche are decorative panels in mustard yellow and ochre, filled with stylized botanical and architectural motifs. Several richly patterned borders surround the field, including floral vines, rosettes, leaves, and small geometric elements in muted green, cream, yellow, brown, burgundy, and dark contrasting tones.
Approximately 70–80 years old, the rug has developed a naturally softened palette, subtle tonal variation, and authentic vintage patina.
About Konya Rugs
Konya is one of the most historically important carpet-weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Handwoven rugs have been produced throughout Konya and its surrounding villages for centuries, with designs shaped by settled village communities, pastoral traditions, and nomadic influences.
Traditional Konya rugs are often recognized for:
- Architectural mihrab and prayer-niche compositions
- Strong geometric and stepped forms
- Stylized flowers, leaves, and botanical motifs
- Multiple richly decorated borders
- Warm reds, yellows, blues, greens, ivory, and earthy shades
- Individual variations created by the hand of the weaver
Prayer rugs were traditionally woven with a directional mihrab, representing an architectural niche and providing the visual focus of the composition. Surrounding floral and symbolic motifs were interpreted differently by individual weavers, giving each piece its own character.
This example is especially attractive for its tall burgundy mihrab, muted central background, mustard decorative panels, and richly layered floral borders.
