A highly distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Konya, Central Anatolia, featuring a remarkable combination of architectural, devotional, floral, and geometric motifs.

The composition is organized around a large dark mihrab-style prayer niche, framed by two slender column-like elements and decorated with a stylized floral motif in the lower field. Above the prayer niche, the weaver has incorporated detailed architectural scenes resembling mosques, domed religious buildings, and minarets, giving the rug a strong narrative and devotional character.

The design is framed by several colorful borders filled with repeating leaves, flowers, geometric forms, and small symbolic motifs. Its palette combines deep navy, burgundy, red, mustard yellow, olive green, ivory, orange, and multicolored accents, producing a visually rich but balanced composition.

Approximately 50 years old, this piece reflects a fascinating meeting of traditional Anatolian prayer-rug design and more pictorial village weaving.

About Konya Rugs

Konya is one of the most historically important weaving regions of Central Anatolia, Turkey. The city and its surrounding villages have maintained a strong carpet-weaving tradition for centuries.

Konya rugs are known for their wide variety of designs, which can include mihrab compositions, geometric medallions, stylized flowers, architectural motifs, symbolic forms, and strongly outlined borders. Older village rugs often display considerable individuality because designs were interpreted directly by the weaver rather than produced according to standardized industrial patterns.

Konya also has an especially important religious and cultural history, which can sometimes be reflected in prayer rugs through mosque imagery, architectural elements, lamps, flowers, and devotional compositions.

This example is particularly interesting because the upper section incorporates pictorial architectural imagery, while the lower section retains the traditional structure of an Anatolian prayer niche.
