A distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Karapınar, Konya, featuring a tall architectural composition, a restrained central field, and richly detailed borders characteristic of traditional Central Anatolian weaving.

The main field is dominated by an elongated stepped niche-like form in warm brick red, set against a deep charcoal-blue background. Two narrow vertical decorative elements flank the central form, reinforcing the architectural feeling of the composition. Soft olive-green panels appear at the upper and lower ends, adding contrast to the darker central field.

The surrounding borders are especially detailed, containing repeated stylized houses, trees, geometric forms, small floral motifs, diamonds, and symbolic village-inspired elements. These decorative bands give the rug a narrative folk-art quality while preserving the strong symmetry typical of traditional Anatolian rugs.

The palette combines brick red, deep navy, charcoal, ivory, muted olive green, burgundy, beige, brown, and small multicolored accents. Approximately 90 years old, the rug has developed a naturally softened surface and subtle tonal variations that contribute to its authentic vintage character.

About Karapınar Rugs

Karapınar is a historic weaving area in Konya Province, Central Anatolia, Turkey, known for its village and nomadic textile traditions.

Traditional Karapınar rugs can vary considerably in design, but many are recognized for:

  • Strong geometric and architectural compositions
  • Mihrab or niche-inspired forms
  • Stylized flowers, trees, and symbolic motifs
  • Bold but balanced border systems
  • Warm reds combined with dark blue, brown, yellow, green, and ivory
  • Individual variations reflecting the interpretation of the weaver

Karapınar weaving developed within a rural environment where carpets were made not only as decorative objects but also as functional household textiles. Because designs were often passed from generation to generation and interpreted by individual weavers, older examples frequently show subtle asymmetry and unique motif combinations.

This piece is particularly interesting for its tall niche-like central design and borders containing architectural and village-inspired motifs, giving it a strong Central Anatolian folk-art identity.
