A distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Karapınar, Konya, featuring a light open field, rhythmic repeating motifs, and a bold dark-blue floral border characteristic of traditional Central Anatolian village weaving.

The ivory central field is organized into an all-over lattice composition formed by small dark angular elements. Repeating stylized motifs in deep red, muted green, dark blue, and black are arranged evenly throughout the field, creating a strong sense of rhythm and symmetry without relying on a large central medallion.

The wide dark-blue border provides a striking contrast and is decorated with larger stylized flowers, leaves, geometric forms, and folk-inspired botanical motifs. Smaller guard borders in red and earthy tones complete the composition and give the rug a balanced architectural frame.

The palette combines ivory, deep navy blue, burgundy, brick red, muted green, black, beige, and earthy accent tones. Approximately 70 years old, the rug displays the natural tonal variation and handmade character expected from an authentic vintage textile.

About Karapınar, Konya Rugs

Karapınar is a historic weaving area in Konya Province, Central Anatolia, Turkey, associated with a long tradition of village and pastoral textile production.

Traditional Karapınar rugs are valued for their individuality and can vary considerably in design. Common characteristics include:

  • Bold geometric and repetitive field patterns
  • Central medallions or all-over compositions
  • Stylized flowers and botanical forms
  • Strongly outlined symbolic motifs
  • Dark blue, red, yellow, green, ivory, and earthy color combinations
  • Clearly structured decorative borders

Many older Karapınar rugs were woven in domestic environments rather than standardized workshops. Patterns were passed between generations and interpreted individually by the weaver, meaning small differences in symmetry, motif placement, and coloration are part of their authentic folk character.

This particular example is especially appealing for its open ivory field, repeating lattice structure, compact geometric motifs, and richly decorated navy floral border.
