A beautifully aged vintage handmade wool rug from Karapınar, Konya, featuring a strong central medallion composition, richly layered borders, and the expressive geometric-floral character associated with traditional Central Anatolian weaving.

The central field is dominated by a warm deep red ground with a large dark blue-gray medallion at the center. Stylized floral and botanical motifs extend from the medallion, creating a balanced symmetrical composition. Olive-green corner sections introduce additional floral details and provide an attractive contrast to the red field.

Several decorative borders surround the central composition. The wide blue-gray border is filled with repeating stylized flowers, palmette-like forms, leaves, and geometric motifs, while narrower ochre and burgundy guard borders create a layered architectural frame.

The palette combines deep red, burgundy, muted blue-gray, olive green, mustard yellow, ivory, soft pink, brown, and earthy tones. Approximately 100 years old, the rug has developed the natural patina, softened colors, and tonal variation expected from an authentic antique handmade textile.

About Karapınar, Konya Rugs

Karapınar is a historic weaving area in Konya Province, Central Anatolia, Turkey, known for its distinctive village and nomadic textile traditions.

Traditional Karapınar rugs can feature a wide range of compositions, including:

  • Large central medallions
  • Geometric and stepped forms
  • Stylized flowers and botanical motifs
  • Strongly outlined decorative elements
  • Multiple structured borders
  • Warm reds combined with blues, greens, yellows, ivory, and earthy colors

Older Karapınar rugs are especially appreciated for the individuality of their designs. Rather than following perfectly standardized workshop patterns, village and nomadic weavers often interpreted inherited motifs in their own way. This results in subtle asymmetry, natural color variation, and highly personal compositions.

This example is particularly notable for its large blue-gray central medallion, rich red field, olive floral corners, and beautifully detailed surrounding borders.
