A beautiful vintage handmade wool rug from Karapınar, Konya, featuring a bold red field, a large floral central medallion, and richly decorated corner and border motifs.
The composition is centered around a large stepped geometric medallion with a soft ivory interior filled with stylized floral forms in burgundy, blue, green, and muted purple. This floral center is surrounded by a darker blue-gray frame, creating strong contrast against the warm red ground.
The four corners are decorated with architectural stepped forms and floral motifs, while the outer border is filled with repeating flowers, leaves, rosettes, and geometric botanical elements. The use of ivory, muted blue, olive green, burgundy, black, and red creates a lively but balanced Anatolian palette.
Approximately 80 years old, the rug shows natural tonal variation, subtle fading, and the individual irregularities expected from a genuine handwoven village textile.
About Konya Karapınar Rugs
Karapınar is an important traditional rug-weaving area in Konya, Central Anatolia, Turkey. Rugs woven in this region are known for combining strong geometric structure with stylized floral and symbolic decoration.
Traditional Karapınar rugs often feature:
- Large central medallions
- Stepped and angular geometric forms
- Stylized flowers and botanical motifs
- Strong corner compositions
- Multiple decorative borders
- Rich reds, blues, greens, ivory, yellow, and earthy tones
- Natural asymmetry and color variation from village weaving
Karapınar rugs are particularly appreciated for their bold visual character and individuality. Many older examples were woven in village settings rather than standardized workshops, so motifs were often interpreted freely by each weaver.
This piece is especially appealing for its large floral medallion, strong red ground, blue-gray framing, and decorative floral border system, giving it a warm and expressive Central Anatolian character.
