A distinctive vintage handmade wool rug from Karapınar, Konya, featuring three prominent geometric medallions, softly aged colors, and the expressive folk character associated with traditional Central Anatolian village weaving.

The central field is arranged around three large medallions, each with its own geometric structure and color treatment. The middle medallion is especially striking, with a deep aubergine-purple ground and a layered floral-geometric center, while the side medallions introduce softer olive, gray-green, dusty rose, and muted lavender tones.

The surrounding border is decorated with repeating stylized leaves, hooked forms, abstract flowers, and angular tribal motifs, giving the rug a strong handmade rhythm. Natural tonal shifts across the field create a beautifully softened and time-worn appearance.

The palette combines dusty burgundy, muted purple, soft rose, olive green, gray-green, ivory, brown, faded orange, and earthy tones. Approximately 70 years old, the rug carries the patina and subtle irregularities expected from an authentic vintage handmade textile.

About Karapınar Rugs

Karapınar is a historic weaving area in Konya Province, Central Anatolia, Turkey, known for its long-standing village and nomadic textile traditions.

Karapınar rugs are particularly appreciated for their individuality and bold folk-art character. Traditional examples may feature:

  • Large geometric medallions
  • Stylized floral and botanical forms
  • Hooked and angular symbolic motifs
  • Strong but irregular village compositions
  • Warm reds, browns, greens, yellows, blues, and ivory tones
  • Natural color variation and handmade asymmetry

Because many older Karapınar rugs were woven in village or domestic environments rather than standardized workshops, the designs were often interpreted freely by individual weavers. This gives antique and vintage examples a particularly personal quality, with subtle differences in proportion, motif placement, and color.

This piece is especially notable for its three-medallion layout, unusual muted purple palette, and naturally softened surface, giving it a very distinctive decorative presence.
