Vintage Konya Karapinar Pictorial Rug, 115 × 172 cm / 3.8 x 5.6 ft Handmade Wool Rug

A rare and highly distinctive vintage pictorial wool rug from Karapınar, Konya, handmade and featuring an unusual village scene with traditional houses, trees, floral motifs, and a woven inscription that includes the date 1940.

Unlike conventional Anatolian rugs based primarily on geometric medallions or repeating patterns, this piece presents a narrative pictorial composition. Three groups of traditional houses dominate the ivory central field, separated by tall stylized trees. Their colorful façades, tiled roofs, windows, and architectural details give the rug the appearance of a woven village portrait.

A broad warm-red border surrounds the scene and is richly decorated with stylized flowers, leaves, and small botanical motifs in ochre, muted blue, ivory, brown, green, terracotta, and soft earthy shades.

One of the most important features of this rug is the woven inscription in the upper-right section, which includes the year 1940. A dated inscription is particularly interesting in a handmade rug because it provides a direct historical reference to the period in which the textile was created or commemorated.
