A distinctive vintage handmade Konya Derbent rug from Central Anatolia, Turkey, woven from wool and featuring a powerful series of large geometric medallions. Measuring 123 × 355 cm (approximately 4 × 11.6 ft), this approximately 90-year-old rug has a long runner format and a beautifully aged village-woven character.

The central field is organized around a sequence of large connected diamond-shaped medallions. Each medallion contains angular cross-like and hooked geometric forms, while contrasting triangular corner sections create a strong sense of movement along the length of the rug.

The composition is framed by decorative borders filled with small repeating geometric and floral-inspired motifs. Its palette has softened naturally over time and includes faded brick red, terracotta, mustard yellow, muted olive, ivory, brown, soft gray, and warm earthy tones.

The visible wear and tonal variation give the rug a particularly authentic vintage appearance and allow the strong geometric structure to remain expressive without appearing overly bright.

About Konya Derbent Rugs

Derbent is a district of Konya in Central Anatolia, an area associated with long-established village weaving traditions. Rugs from this region often feature bold geometric motifs, angular medallions, strong outlines, earthy colors, and substantial wool construction.

The design of this piece is especially interesting because the field is built from a continuous sequence of large medallions rather than a single central motif. This repeated structure creates a rhythmic pattern that is particularly effective in a long runner.

Typical handmade characteristics such as slight differences in symmetry, motif scale, coloration, and weaving tension are not defects; they reflect the individual work of the village weaver and give the rug its unique identity.

This piece is notable for its:

  • Large repeating diamond medallions
  • Strong angular and hooked geometric forms
  • Long traditional runner proportions
  • Layered decorative borders
  • Warm, naturally faded village colors
  • Handmade wool construction
  • Authentic aged surface and patina
