A distinctive vintage handmade Konya Derbent rug from Central Anatolia, Turkey, woven from wool and featuring a striking three-medallion geometric composition. Measuring 160 × 300 cm (5.2 × 9.8 ft), this approximately 80-year-old rug reflects the strong village-weaving tradition of the Konya region.
The central field has a beautifully softened brick-red ground with three large geometric medallions arranged horizontally. The two outer medallions are predominantly dark brown and black with warm ochre centers, while the middle medallion introduces a striking ivory ground with muted red, blue, green, and yellow details. This contrasting central motif gives the composition a particularly individual character.
Large angular corner motifs in warm mustard and cream extend into the field. Several decorative borders surround the composition, including repeating diamond forms, small floral elements, angular motifs, and multicolored geometric details. The wide dark inner border creates strong visual definition between the central field and outer frame.
The palette includes brick red, burgundy, mustard yellow, ochre, dark brown, black, ivory, muted blue, green, orange, and soft earthy tones. Natural aging has softened the colors and created subtle tonal variations throughout the wool.
About Konya Derbent Rugs
Derbent is a district of Konya in Central Anatolia, a historically important region for Turkish village carpet weaving. Rugs associated with the wider Konya area are known for their bold geometric language, substantial wool construction, strong medallions, angular ornamentation, and expressive use of color.
Village-made Derbent rugs often combine established regional weaving traditions with the individual interpretation of the weaver. Because they were handmade rather than mechanically produced, differences in symmetry, motif scale, color placement, and border details give each piece its own character.
This particular rug is especially notable for its:
- Three large geometric medallions
- Contrasting ivory central medallion
- Spacious brick-red field
- Strong angular corner ornaments
- Wide geometric border system
- Repeating multicolored diamond motifs
- Traditional handmade wool construction
- Naturally softened vintage coloration
