A distinctive vintage handmade Konya Derbent rug from Central Anatolia, Turkey, woven entirely from wool and featuring a strong double-medallion composition with richly layered geometric borders. Measuring 152 × 310 cm (5 × 10 ft), this approximately 80-year-old piece reflects the bold visual language associated with traditional village weaving from the Konya region.
The warm deep red central field is decorated with two large symmetrical geometric medallions. Each medallion combines dark brown and black outlines with orange, muted blue, ivory, and small floral details, creating a strong focal point without overcrowding the field.
Decorative corner elements extend inward from the sides, while the surrounding borders feature repeated triangular, diamond, floral, and angular motifs. The contrast between the relatively open central field and the highly ornamented borders gives the rug a particularly balanced and architectural appearance.
The palette includes brick red, burgundy, dark brown, black, orange, mustard, muted blue, olive green, ivory, and earthy tones. Natural fading and tonal differences developed over decades give the wool a warm vintage character.
About Konya Derbent Rugs
Derbent is a district in the wider Konya region of Central Anatolia, an area with a longstanding tradition of village carpet weaving. Rugs associated with this region commonly reflect the practical and decorative textile culture of rural Anatolian communities.
Konya-area village rugs are particularly appreciated for their bold geometric medallions, strong outlines, expressive color combinations, and individually interpreted motifs. Rather than perfectly mechanical symmetry, handmade pieces often contain small variations that reveal the decisions of the individual weaver.
This Derbent example is especially attractive for its open red field and paired medallion arrangement. The relatively uncluttered center allows the medallions to stand out, while the richly patterned borders provide visual depth.
Its notable characteristics include:
- Two prominent geometric medallions
- Deep red open central field
- Strong angular and stepped forms
- Wide multi-layered geometric borders
- Stylized floral and symbolic details
- Traditional Konya village character
- Handmade wool construction
- Naturally aged coloration
