A striking vintage handmade Konya Derbent rug from Central Anatolia, Turkey, woven entirely from wool and featuring a beautifully balanced double-medallion composition. Measuring 150 × 320 cm (4.9 × 10 ft), this approximately 90-year-old rug reflects the strong geometric vocabulary and expressive village craftsmanship associated with the Konya region.
The warm brick-red central field is centered around two large dark geometric medallions. Each medallion is constructed with stepped and angular forms and highlighted with mustard yellow, muted orange, burgundy, cream, brown, and subtle blue-gray details.
One of the most attractive aspects of this piece is the contrast between the relatively open central field and the richly decorated surrounding borders. Large triangular and diamond-shaped motifs alternate through the border system, while smaller floral and geometric details add complexity and rhythm.
About Konya Derbent Rugs
Derbent is a district of Konya in Central Anatolia, a region with a longstanding rural weaving tradition. Rugs produced in and around Konya are especially recognized for their bold geometric structures, strong medallions, angular motifs, warm earthy colors, and expressive handmade character.
Derbent village rugs often reflect the personal interpretation of traditional Anatolian motifs rather than mechanically repeated designs. Small differences in symmetry, motif placement, and color are therefore part of the rug’s individuality.
This example is particularly notable for its:
- Two large geometric medallions
- Spacious warm red central field
- Strong dark outlines around the central motifs
- Wide architectural border composition
- Repeating diamonds and triangular forms
- Rich but naturally softened color palette
- Traditional handmade wool construction
- Authentic village-woven character
At approximately 90 years old, the rug has developed a beautifully softened surface and natural tonal variations that enhance its vintage appearance.
