A distinctive vintage handmade Konya Derbent rug from Central Anatolia, Turkey, woven entirely from wool and featuring a strong double-medallion geometric composition. Measuring 150 × 305 cm (4.9 × 10 ft), this approximately 90-year-old rug is a beautiful example of traditional village weaving from the wider Konya region.

The central field is dominated by two large dark geometric medallions positioned symmetrically on a warm brick-red background. Each medallion contains an ochre-orange center surrounded by angular extensions and smaller geometric details, creating a bold visual contrast against the open red field.

Decorative corner and side elements partially project into the central field, while several surrounding borders introduce repeating triangular, diamond, floral, arrow-like, and angular motifs. The densely patterned borders contrast beautifully with the more spacious center, giving the rug a balanced and architectural composition.

Its palette combines brick red, deep burgundy, dark brown, black, mustard yellow, muted orange, olive green, cream, pale blue-gray, and subtle earthy tones. Natural aging has softened the original colors and created attractive tonal variations throughout the wool.

About Konya Derbent Rugs

Derbent is a district within Konya in Central Anatolia, a region with a longstanding tradition of rural carpet weaving. Rugs from the wider Konya area are often distinguished by large-scale geometric motifs, strong outlines, expressive color combinations, and substantial handmade wool construction.

Village weavers traditionally worked within established regional design traditions while interpreting motifs individually. For this reason, slight differences in symmetry, motif proportions, and color placement are considered part of the character of authentic handmade rugs.

This example is particularly notable for its:

  • Two large geometric medallions
  • Spacious brick-red central field
  • Strong dark outlines and ochre centers
  • Architectural corner ornaments
  • Multiple richly patterned border bands
  • Repeating triangular and diamond motifs
  • Naturally softened vintage colors
  • Traditional handmade wool construction

At approximately 90 years old, the rug shows the beautiful patina and subtle irregularities that come from decades of age and use.
