An elegant vintage handmade Kayseri rug, woven with a wool and cotton combination and distinguished by its finely detailed floral composition, balanced proportions, and sophisticated traditional character.

The central field is covered with a dense all-over floral pattern arranged symmetrically across a warm terracotta-red ground. Delicate flowers, leaves, vines, and palmette-like forms create a highly intricate surface without relying on a dominant central medallion. The field is surrounded by several finely worked borders, including a wide ivory floral border that beautifully contrasts with the richer central color.

The palette combines terracotta red, ivory, cream, muted blue, soft green, beige, brown, dusty pink, and subtle dark accents. The softly aged colors give the piece an elegant, understated appearance that works equally well in traditional and contemporary interiors.

Approximately 60 years old, this rug displays the natural character and subtle tonal variations associated with a genuine handmade vintage textile.

About Kayseri Rugs

Kayseri is one of the important historic carpet-weaving centers of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Rugs from Kayseri are particularly associated with fine workmanship, detailed floral ornamentation, balanced compositions, and carefully structured borders.

Compared with more boldly geometric village rugs from other parts of Anatolia, many Kayseri carpets feature a more refined decorative vocabulary. Common characteristics include:

  • Intricate floral and botanical designs
  • Dense all-over compositions
  • Delicate vines, blossoms, palmettes, and small medallion forms
  • Multiple finely detailed borders
  • Carefully coordinated, often sophisticated color palettes
  • Relatively fine and precise weaving

This particular example is especially attractive for its continuous floral field and broad ivory floral border, creating a richly patterned surface without becoming visually heavy.

Wool & Cotton Combination

This rug is made using a combination of wool and cotton, a construction frequently found in finely woven Turkish carpets.

In traditional rug making, wool is valued for its warmth, resilience, texture, and ability to hold color, while cotton provides strength and dimensional stability. In many rugs of this type, cotton is commonly used in the structural foundation while wool forms much of the visible pile, though the exact construction can vary from piece to piece.

The combination allows for finer pattern definition and a more stable structure, which is particularly well suited to the detailed floral designs associated with Kayseri weaving.
