A finely detailed vintage handmade rug from Kayseri, Central Anatolia, woven using a combination of wool and cotton and featuring an elegant all-over floral composition with a warm red central field.

The main field is filled with a dense repeating arrangement of stylized flowers, leaves, vines, and small botanical motifs. Rather than using a dominant central medallion, the design follows an all-over pattern, creating a continuous and highly decorative surface.

The rich red field is surrounded by a wide ivory and soft beige border filled with flowing palmette-like and botanical motifs. Dark outlines emphasize the intricate details, while the lighter border provides a strong contrast to the dense central composition.

The palette combines deep red, burgundy, ivory, beige, muted brown, olive, pale blue, and subtle dark accents. Approximately 60 years old, the rug has developed attractive natural tonal variation and a softly aged appearance.

About Kayseri Rugs

Kayseri, located in Central Anatolia, is one of Turkey's best-known historic carpet-weaving centers. The region has produced both village rugs and more finely constructed workshop-style carpets, often distinguished by detailed floral ornamentation and carefully organized compositions.

Traditional Kayseri rugs may feature:

  • Detailed all-over floral patterns
  • Medallion and floral compositions
  • Stylized vines, leaves, rosettes, and palmettes
  • Fine repeating botanical motifs
  • Carefully structured decorative borders
  • Red, ivory, blue, green, beige, and earthy palettes

Compared with many boldly geometric Anatolian village rugs, Kayseri carpets often have a finer and more ornamental visual character, with dense patterning and delicate floral details.

This particular example is especially appealing for its rich red all-over floral field, light decorative border, and balanced wool-and-cotton construction.

Wool and Cotton Combination

This rug is handmade using a combination of wool and cotton, a material pairing commonly found in many traditional Turkish carpets.

Wool contributes warmth, texture, resilience, and the characteristic tactile quality associated with handwoven rugs. Cotton can provide additional structural stability and allows the weaving to support smaller, more detailed motifs and a more refined overall appearance.

The combination gives this piece a different character from an entirely wool rug, particularly in the precision of its dense floral design.
