A beautifully aged vintage handmade wool rug from Karapınar, Konya, featuring an elegant central medallion composition, softly faded colors, and the distinctive decorative character of traditional Central Anatolian weaving.

The design is centered around a large floral medallion set against a warm muted burgundy field. Its layered ivory, rose, ochre, and earthy details create a refined focal point, while stepped corner sections filled with stylized flowers and botanical motifs frame the central composition.

A broad outer border in soft gray-blue and beige tones is decorated with repeating leaf, floral, and geometric motifs, giving the rug a balanced architectural structure. The palette combines muted burgundy, dusty rose, ochre yellow, ivory, soft gray-blue, beige, brown, and warm earthy tones.

Approximately 100 years old, this rug has developed a beautiful natural patina and gently softened colors that emphasize its antique character.

About Karapınar, Konya Rugs

Karapınar is an important traditional weaving area within Konya Province in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The region has a long history of village and nomadic textile production, with rugs woven for domestic use as well as decorative and ceremonial purposes.

Karapınar rugs are particularly appreciated for their strong individual character. Depending on the period and weaving community, they may feature:

  • Large central medallions
  • Bold geometric compositions
  • Stylized floral and botanical motifs
  • Stepped or architectural forms
  • Prayer-niche designs
  • Strong but harmonious border systems
  • Warm reds, yellows, browns, blues, ivory, and earthy tones

Older Karapınar rugs often display noticeable variation in drawing and color because they were traditionally woven by individual village or nomadic weavers rather than produced according to standardized factory patterns.

This example is particularly attractive for its large floral medallion, open burgundy field, softly colored corner motifs, and muted decorative border, giving it a sophisticated yet unmistakably Anatolian character.
