A striking vintage handmade wool rug from Döşemealtı, Antalya, featuring a deep dark field, bold geometric medallions, and the powerful tribal character associated with traditional southern Anatolian village weaving.
The central field is dominated by three diamond-shaped geometric medallions arranged horizontally across a deep navy and dark brown ground. The two larger medallions contain ivory cross-like floral forms, while a smaller central diamond balances the composition. Numerous small rosettes, hooked motifs, diamonds, and abstract symbols fill the surrounding field.
Several decorative borders frame the design. Narrow diagonal bands in burgundy, red, ivory, and dark blue create rhythmic movement, while the broader outer border contains repeating stylized geometric and botanical motifs. The strong contrast between the dark background and lighter motifs gives the rug a bold, graphic appearance.
The palette combines deep navy, burgundy, dark brown, brick red, ivory, muted blue, black, and earthy tones. Approximately 70 years old, this piece has developed the natural patina and subtle tonal variations expected from an authentic handmade vintage textile.
About Döşemealtı Rugs
Döşemealtı is a traditional rug-weaving region in Antalya Province in southern Anatolia, Turkey. The area is particularly associated with village and Yörük-influenced weaving traditions, producing rugs known for their strong geometry, dark saturated colors, and highly recognizable tribal character.
Traditional Döşemealtı rugs frequently feature:
- Bold diamond and geometric medallions
- Hooked and angular tribal motifs
- Stylized flowers and symbolic forms
- Strongly structured multiple borders
- Deep red, burgundy, navy, black, ivory, and earthy palettes
- Dense wool construction intended for everyday household use
Unlike finely detailed workshop carpets, Döşemealtı rugs often emphasize large-scale geometry and strong color contrast. Their patterns were traditionally interpreted by individual village weavers, so slight differences in symmetry, motif size, and coloration are an important part of their handmade identity.
This example is especially attractive for its three-medallion composition, deep navy field, ivory geometric details, and strongly patterned borders, giving it an unmistakable Anatolian tribal aesthetic.
