A striking vintage handmade wool rug from the Döşemealtı weaving tradition, featuring bold tribal geometry, deep saturated colors, and the expressive character associated with traditional nomadic and village weaving in southern Anatolia.
The central field is dominated by a deep navy-blue ground with three connected geometric medallion-like forms arranged horizontally. Angular red corner sections, smaller symbolic motifs, and strong ivory outlines create a powerful sense of symmetry and movement.
The surrounding borders are especially decorative. A light inner border features repeating circular floral forms, while the wider dark outer border contains stylized flowers, hooked motifs, diamonds, and abstract tribal symbols. These multiple layers give the rug a strong architectural frame.
The palette combines deep navy, black, brick red, burgundy, ivory, muted turquoise, brown, and earthy accent tones. Approximately 60 years old, the rug carries the natural patina, subtle surface variation, and individual irregularities expected from an authentic handmade vintage textile.
About Döşemealtı Nomadic Rugs
Döşemealtı is a traditional carpet-weaving area in the Antalya region of southern Turkey. The name is closely associated with distinctive village and nomadic-style carpets known for their strong geometric compositions and rich, dark color palettes.
Traditional Döşemealtı rugs often feature:
- Bold geometric medallions
- Deep red, navy, black, and ivory color combinations
- Hooked and angular tribal motifs
- Stylized flowers and symbolic forms
- Strongly structured borders
- Durable handwoven wool construction
The designs reflect the broader weaving culture of Yörük and rural Anatolian communities, where rugs were traditionally produced for everyday household use as well as for dowries and decorative purposes.
Unlike workshop carpets with highly standardized patterns, nomadic and village rugs often show small variations in symmetry, motif size, and drawing. These details give each piece its individual folk-art character.
This example is especially attractive for its dark central field, three-part geometric composition, contrasting ivory border, and richly patterned outer frame.
