A striking vintage handmade wool rug from the Caucasian Derbent weaving tradition, featuring a bold geometric composition, three prominent medallion forms, and a beautifully balanced palette of coral red, blue, ivory, mustard yellow, brown, and muted green.
The central field is dominated by three large geometric medallions arranged horizontally. Two darker blue medallions flank a lighter central motif, creating a strong symmetrical rhythm. Each medallion is built from stepped, angular forms and contains smaller diamonds, checkerboard details, and arrow-like extensions.
Numerous smaller diamond and rosette-like motifs are scattered across the warm coral-red field. The surrounding borders combine pale blue serrated forms, narrow geometric bands, and an outer mustard-and-blue diamond border, giving the rug a highly structured architectural appearance.
Approximately 60 years old, the rug has developed attractive tonal variation and a naturally softened vintage surface while retaining strong clarity in its geometric pattern.
About Caucasian Derbent Rugs
Derbent is a historic city and cultural crossroads on the western coast of the Caspian Sea in the Caucasus. Rugs associated with the Derbent tradition belong to the broader family of Caucasian weaving, which is especially known for bold geometry, strong outlines, and richly organized border systems.
Traditional Derbent and related Caucasian rugs may feature:
- Large geometric medallions
- Stars, diamonds, and stepped forms
- Hooked and arrow-like motifs
- Repeating small geometric ornaments
- Strongly structured multiple borders
- Contrasting red, blue, ivory, yellow, green, and brown tones
- Individual variations characteristic of handmade village weaving
Compared with more floral carpet traditions, Caucasian rugs often emphasize clear geometry and strong graphic contrast. This example is especially distinctive for its three-medallion layout, pale blue and navy forms, warm coral-red field, checkerboard centers, and finely organized borders.
