A remarkable antique handmade Kurdish wool rug from the Malatya region of Eastern Anatolia, featuring a powerful double-panel composition, bold geometric medallions, and richly layered tribal motifs.
Approximately 120 years old, this piece carries the unmistakable character of an antique village weaving. Its naturally softened colors, irregular hand-drawn geometry, surface wear, and tonal variations reflect both its considerable age and traditional handmade construction.
The central field is divided into two large rectangular compartments, each containing a prominent geometric medallion. Although the two panels follow a related visual structure, their motifs are deliberately different, giving the rug a spontaneous and highly individual character.
The left medallion is dominated by deep navy and muted turquoise outlines surrounding a stepped diamond form, while the right panel features a more complex medallion composed of brown, ivory, red, and dark geometric elements. Smaller hooked and angular motifs occupy the corners of both compartments.
A wide outer border surrounds the composition with repeating hooked and stepped geometric forms in mustard yellow, blue, red, brown, and ivory. Narrower secondary borders create additional depth and reinforce the strong graphic structure.
About Kurdish Rugs from Malatya
Malatya is located in Eastern Anatolia and has historically been connected with diverse village and tribal weaving traditions, including Kurdish communities. Rugs associated with these traditions were generally handmade in domestic settings and often display highly individual interpretations of inherited geometric designs.
Kurdish rugs from Eastern Anatolia are particularly appreciated for their:
- Bold geometric medallions
- Compartment and double-panel compositions
- Stepped diamonds and hooked forms
- Strong, saturated color contrasts
- Dense wool construction
- Spontaneous variations in symmetry
- Individual motifs reflecting village weaving traditions
Unlike standardized workshop carpets, older Kurdish village rugs often preserve visible differences between repeated motifs. These variations are an important part of their character and demonstrate the direct involvement of the individual weaver.
This example is especially distinctive for its two contrasting central medallions, rich brick-red field, dark blue accents, mustard-colored geometric border, and exceptionally aged appearance.
Antique Character
At approximately 120 years old, this rug can appropriately be described as an antique textile.
Its age is visible through the softened surface, naturally mellowed colors, variations in pile, and irregularities developed through generations of use. Rather than diminishing the piece, these characteristics contribute to its historical presence and collectible appeal.
The palette includes brick red, burgundy, dark navy, muted turquoise, mustard yellow, brown, ivory, and earthy tones, creating a deep and sophisticated antique appearance.
