A remarkable antique handmade wool prayer rug from the Cappadocia region of Central Anatolia, Turkey, featuring an elegant architectural mihrab, floral motifs, and an exceptionally detailed multi-border composition.

Approximately 120 years old, this rug carries a strong antique character with naturally softened colors, subtle tonal variations, and the patina expected from a textile of this age.

The central composition features a tall red mihrab, or prayer niche, outlined with a finely stepped arch. Above the niche, stylized flowering plants rise symmetrically against an ivory field, while the interior contains an elaborate hanging ornament resembling the traditional mosque-lamp motif frequently encountered in Anatolian prayer-rug design.

The prayer field is surrounded by numerous decorative borders containing repeating floral, geometric, hooked, and botanical motifs. The combination of deep red, ivory, mustard yellow, olive, brown, muted pink, and small blue accents gives the rug a sophisticated and beautifully aged palette.

About Cappadocia Rugs

Cappadocia is a historic region in Central Anatolia, encompassing an area associated today with parts of Nevşehir, Kayseri, Niğde, and Aksaray. Beyond its famous rock formations and historic settlements, the wider Cappadocian region has long been connected with Anatolian textile and village-weaving traditions.

Rugs associated with the region can reflect influences from neighboring Central Anatolian weaving centers, and designs can vary considerably from one community to another.

Traditional examples may feature:

  • Prayer-niche or mihrab compositions
  • Stylized flowers and flowering trees
  • Mosque-lamp-inspired ornaments
  • Stepped architectural forms
  • Multiple narrow decorative borders
  • Geometric and botanical motifs used together
  • Warm reds, yellows, ivory, brown, green, and muted natural tones

This particular example is especially notable for its elongated red mihrab, symmetrical floral elements, central hanging ornament, and exceptionally rich layered border system.

About the Prayer Rug Design

A traditional Turkish prayer rug is commonly known as a seccade. Its defining visual feature is the mihrab, a niche-shaped composition inspired by the prayer niche found in mosque architecture.

The hanging motif inside the niche can be interpreted within the decorative tradition of mosque lamps and suspended ornaments, while the flowering plants surrounding the arch introduce themes of garden and botanical ornamentation commonly seen in Anatolian decorative arts.

The combination of architectural and floral elements gives this rug both a devotional character and a highly decorative appearance.
